How is it that you're called Marconi when you are English?
The name actually came about as a result of a joke more than anything else. One year I decided to go in for the Plymouth 'Battle-of-the-Bands' competition. Up until that time I had been known for my acoustic guitar music under my real name. But because I was now going to be playing Spanish guitar, I felt that I should create a new image in the character of Algreco Marconi.
Adorned with a 3 foot Sombrero, a false Mexican moustache and a phoney accent, I strummed my way through the heats and on to the final. The public seemed to warm to the characterization and the publicity I got was encouraging. Although I was stitched up by the judges from the Plymouth Sound radio station ('How can one person be a band?' they said), I felt that I had lost nothing in defeat. So that is how Al Marconi came about.
